Pets at Home Thundershirt Review

Tuesday, 12 November 2013
I don't post about our family pets often on here although alongside Jack they are our babies. Recently we were contacted to see if we would like to review a Thundershirt. The main use of the Thundershirt is for anxiety problems and fear of thunder and fireworks. Luckily our dogs are outdoor dogs and have no dear of fireworks or thunder. However when I did a little research into Thundershirt I noticed it helps control problem jumping and lead pulling which are big problems we have with Abbie especially. I therefore agreed to review the Thundershirt and was keen to see if it worked.

The product is extremely soft and is made from 55% Cotton, 35% Polyester and 10% Spandex. It comes in a grey colour as standard or you can now purchase a pink or blue design too.
'Thundershirts patent-pending design applies gentle, constant pressure on a dogs torso, and this pressure has an amazing calming effect for most dogs. Pressure has been used to successfully reduce anxiety for many years for both animals and humans.'
'Thundershirt can used for the following symptoms: Fear of thunder, Fear of fireworks,  Separation anxiety, Crate training, Problem barking, Problem Jumping, Lead pulling and many more!'
The way this product works is extremely simple yet very effective it may seem. Working by applying a constant gentle pressure to their torso, similar to swaddling a baby. When we first put the Thundershirt on Abbie she was not impressed, giving us 'dog eyes' as such. However, she soon got used to it and was absolutely fine and happy to wear it.

When she was used to wearing it, we were then set to head on a walk. I expected Abbie to be as crazy as always on the walk, which in turn makes it difficult to control two dogs and a crazy toddler. However, I am pleased to inform she was a lot calmer! Of course when we see other animals around she does a little pull, especially around the ducks but not half as much as she used too and enough that I can handle. In the garden we also tried it for her problem jumping and she seems to have calmed a lot more on that aspect too.
All in all I would definitely recommend this product as I feel it has helped a lot with the little problems with our dog and for others with larger problems it may help ease too.
The Thundershirt comes in a range of sizes from XS to XL and is available from Pets At Home priced at £35.
