Sugar and Crumbs - A Review

Saturday, 18 January 2014
I love to cook, but since having Jack I hardly find time to as much. Baking was what I mostly enjoyed, often making cakes for my dads work colleagues. When I saw on twitter Sugar and Crumbs were looking for reviewers, I thought what better way could I get my bake on.

Sugar and Crumbs are a UK family run business, with a strong emphasis on convenience without the compromises. They offer a range of 24 naturally flavoured icing sugars and 5 cocoa powders suitable for all bakers at affordable prices. "We pride ourselves on out uniqueness within the baking industry and out unrivaled flavour portfolio." Sugar and Crumbs recently did a launch at Cake International at the Birmingham NEC, which as a previous attendee of the show is a perfect show for all cake fanatics!

Sugar and Crumbs sent us a lovely package of goodies, we received a shopping bag, which included a pack of chocolate cherry natural flavoured cocoa powder. Also included were three packs of natural flavoured icing sugar - turkish delight, peach melba and white chocolate. I was a little apprehensive to try the chocolate cherry mix, mainly because I'm not overly keen on cherry, however I gave it a go!
What I love about each of the packages, is they are re-sealable. Fantastic for when you don't want to use all of the sugars or mixes at once, but allows them to stay fresh.

In with our package, Sugar and Crumbs had included a recipe for simple cupcakes, and also a recipe for butter cream, so I used these.
Once I opened the chocolate cherry cocoa powder, there was a strong cherry smelt across the kitchen - not fab for someone not a fan, but I continued. I followed the recipe included within the package. We then placed the cakes within the oven and awaited them to cook.

Whilst the cakes were cooling, I mixed together a couple of batches of the butter cream. I then proceeded to pipe them onto the cakes - my piping skills are not incredibly but still. Each of the icing sugars were white, I expected them to have different colours for each flavour, however they were completely natural with no colours. Each of the icing sugars were really realistic tastes, which is obviously a good point.

Taste testing was our final step - Jack had great pleasure in this. As I previously stated, I was a bit apprehensive about the chocolate cherry cake, however I wasn't able to taste the cherry as strongly as I thought. It was softly mixed in with the chocolate and was a lovely taste.
I won't be entering Great British Bake Off anytime soon, however Sugar and Crumbs did allow me to try different flavours which tasted amazing. I'll continue to use the flavours when making an unusual cake as they are incredible.

Please Note: I was sent the above products for the purpose of this review, however all opinions are my own.
