Important Tips that will Help You To Keep Your New Dog Safe

Saturday, 30 June 2018
If you have a pet then you will know how important it is for you to look after them and keep them safe as much as you can. This is easier said than done, because at times, it may feel as though they will do absolutely anything to get out of the house or even take themselves for a walk up to the local field. For this reason, you really do need to go that extra mile when it comes to keeping them safe, and you can find a couple of hints and tips to get you started right here.

Have a Photo

You need to make sure that you always have a photograph of your pet. This is very important because if your pet ever gets lost, you may find it hard to spread the word if you don’t have a good HD photograph. This is one of the first things that you should do when you bring your pet home, and it will really help you to prepare for any problems that you might have in the future. Another thing that you have to remember is that dogs and other pets do grow up fast, so taking a new photo every few months is crucial if you want to try and keep them safe as much as possible.

Contact Information

If you have some dog tags for your pet then this is great, and some of them even allow you to engrave your phone number on them as well. This is ideal if your pet ever happens to get out of the house, and it can save you a lot of headaches in the future. It also helps to make sure that you have your pet microchipped as well. If your dog ever winds up at the vets or if they get in an accident when you are not there, then your vet will be able to inform you of this and it is one of the best ways for you to keep your pet safe at all times. A lot of owners get their pet microchipped but they don’t bother with a dog tag. This is not good at all, because if a stranger happens to find your dog in the street then they have no way of contacting you unless they take
your dog to the vets, and this may not always be possible for them to do.

Leashes

Leashes need to be replaced over time. Your dog may think that it’s a good idea for them to chew through the leash and they may also find it funny to try and slip loose from their collar as well. One thing that you can do here is try and check the collar for your dog on a regular basis to make sure that it is not coming loose or wearing thin. You also need to check the leash to make sure that it is not fraying, because if your dog likes to pull on the lead then this could easily cause it to snap under the pressure. Some dog collars come with two metal loops as well, one is to tuck the extra length of collar under and the other is for the lead. You have to make sure that you clip the lead onto the right loop because the secondary loop is not designed to withstand any kind of tension.

Leaving your Dog

If you need to go to the shop then it may be tempting for you to leave your dog outside the shop while you nip in. After all, it means that they get a walk and it also means that they can get a bit of exercise as well. The main reason why you shouldn’t do this is because it leaves your dog open to thieves. You’d be surprised at how many dogs get stolen every year. Some thieves sell the dog onto other people and others will ask you to pay a ransom to get your dog back as well. This is a situation that is easily preventable, so don’t tie your dog up outside a shop and if you do have to, then make sure that they can be seen at all times. Another problem with leaving your dog unattended is that other dogs may walk up to your pet and cause problems. This is especially the case if your dog has nervous tendencies, as they may snap when provoked or they may instigate a fight and this is the last thing that you need when you are not there to help.

Treats!

When you are out walking the dog, things can happen. After all, you may find that your dog tries to run in front of the road or you may find that they just pull constantly. You need to know how to correct this behaviour right from the start because if you don’t then this could cause you major problems in the future. You may find that your dog becomes disobedient and you may even find that as time goes on, it gets harder and harder to train them. When you carry some treats in your pocket however, you can maintain their full concentration at all times. This is a great way for you to prevent disasters like the ones listed above from happening, and it can also help you
to teach your dog to behave when they are out and on their walk as well.

So there are so many things that you can do to try and keep your pet safe and you’d be surprised at how easy it is for you to really give them the support that they need to live a long and happy life. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure that you are doing everything you can for your pet as well, so if you have not taken them in for their vaccinations yet or if you know that you have not taken the time to get them insured then you need to do this as soon as you possibly can.
