Tree Top Adventures at Go Ape Coombe Abbey | A Review [#AD]

Friday, 31 May 2019
Recently we were invited along to the opening weekend of Go Ape in Coventry. The park is situated in Coombe Country Park, which is such a lovely setting with Coombe Abbey located there too.
Around the UK, Go Ape have over 30 locations, with one a little more local to us.

The local course at Cannock Chase, Jack has often spoken about, saying how fun it looks as we've followed parts of the course throughout. However, I always thought Jack was too little, and always said 'when you're bigger', little did I know you can actually go on the course if you are over 1m tall!

Go Ape, is perfect for the whole family, especially a thrill-seeking family, that's not us I don't think. We all took part in the adventure, with Isla being just tall enough. There are various courses located at Go Ape Coventry, which are all height dependent. The Tree Top Adventure is for all ages, but children must be over 1m tall, children over 6 years and over 1.2m tall can take part in the Tree Top Adventure+, then there is the Tree Top Challenge, which again is suitable for all ages, but you must be over 1.4m tall.

Our slot to the course was booked for 10am, just as the site was opening, we headed up to the desk to check in went through a set of safety rules and signed a consent form. We had taken a bag up with us, with my camera in and some bits for Isla, but we had to leave it at the office where they stored it for us. Once we had gone through this, we walked up to the course, where we were greeted by a lovely bunch of staff, who gave us another quick safety course and harnessed us up.

Whilst Isla was initially excited to 'climb the trees', when we got to put the harness on, she became really scared, not wanting to take part anymore. Jack and Ashley went ahead, putting on their harnesses and doing the training course, before heading up to the ropes. Isla continued to say how she wanted a turn but not want the harness on. The staff there were so patient, and calming and allowed Isla to put the harness on at her own pace. Isla went on the training course twice to get her used to it before we went up to the ropes. Once she was on the ropes, you never would have known that she didn't want the harness on just 10 minutes prior.

The training course was a simple low down course, which taught you how to put the trolleys on, how to pull the trolley around with you and a few simple aspects of the course. The trolleys go onto a metal cord at the beginning of the courses, which the instructors put on for you on the smaller courses, you then cannot remove the trolleys until the end of the course.

Before Isla and I even got up to the course, Ashley and Jack were already part way around the first course, they whizzed around with Jack absolutely loving taking part. They went on to do course 2 and 3 as well of the Tree Top Adventure, which proved a little more challenging. Isla and I stook to the first course as we were advised Isla probably wouldn't be able to do the others.

Once we were up in the ropes, Isla showed no fear at all, whizzing across the platforms with the instructors praising her from the bottom giving her encouragement. When she saw Jack throughout the course she would shout to him to look at her.

Once at the end of the courses there is a zipwire to go down, I thought the children wouldn't enjoy this but they both loved it, and out of the 4 of us - it was me who was petrified of this. Isla and Jack simply just walked off the end of it with no fear at all.
